Rigs of Rods is going Open Source
« on: February 08, 2009, 11:17:02 PM »
I decided to publish the source code of Rigs of Rods 0.36 under the GPLv3 licence.
Why this decision?

    * To attract and motivate more volunteers and contributors.
    * To give us some oxygen. The project is too big to maintain for just Thomas and me. Also, we have the desire to turn the page and work on new projects, possibly related to RoR, but I don't want to "kill" RoR by doing so.
    * To give back to all the Open Source projects that gave us the possibility to use their code under the LGPL, like Ogre3D.
    * To be able to use the resources offered by SourceForge for Open Source projects.
    * To ease the porting of RoR to the Linux platform.

This will have no influences on the release of 0.36, which is close to be finished (the code is finished, and we are selecting and testing the contents. Unfortunately my computer decided this was the right time to have a hardware malfunction, and I'm finishing with half my RAM!).

I open this thread to discuss this between RoR fans.
Once 0.36 will be released, I will do more widespread announcement to build the hype.
As I do not want to hype something that does not exist yet, please refrain to post this information to large opensource forums or media until 0.36 is finally published.

WOW! :o Very nice! I hope this is okay with you since I don't want anyone to steal your idea ;). But this is great because now anyone can add stuff to RoR and help you! This would open many possibilities like maybe even a section of the repository for RoR code modifications. Well congradulations and I hope it goes well!  :)

YAY!!!

With some luck, maybe I'll manage to compile a ppc version soon.

EDIT:
Wait a minute...  IT'S NOT THERE YET!!!
If you are waiting for 0.36 to officially go open-source, could you put up the source to 0.35 so modders can get started?

I like Nipash's idea of having a repository section just for the Codes :)

Hmm, Maybe Ill start modding RoR instead of vehicles! :P

for that we have the new sourceforge bugtracker (http://apps.sourceforge.net/mantisbt/rigsofrods/)
supply patches there. the repository is not the correct place for code.

Will 0.36 be released on souceforge then so we won't have to rely on the repositories bandwidth?

Seriously, the news about rigs of rods going open source, is so much better than hearing 36 being released!  BUT now they are going to be together, wow this is awesome!

Oh...  I didn't think the source would be much more than 20 MB...  Does it include the code for the various dependencies, then?  Or is the official media included?

A new IRC channel has been opened, #rigsofrodsdev on quakenet, for discussing the open sourcing, etc.

This has been a public service announcement.

 ;D
I noticed as soon as I hit return on the checkout command.  While it does increase the immediate download size, it means I don't have to go hunting for them later.

Well, thanks for going open source!

Ok, so what does making the game "open source" mean? For those of us that aren't aware of what that means...

It means you can edit the game like thomas and pricorde do, like add a new feature into the game if you know what you're doing. ;)

Well, I'm not 100% sure does I like this open source thing. If peoples make something what I don't like. I knowthat I don't have to download that version, but when next version is out, then that bad thing is there. Well, I wait and look, how things start going.

Isn't that the entire purpose of the back-up site?

Only good things will be added to next official version.. It's not like all the crappy mods are getting included..

I like the idea. I think it'll only make RoR better. If only I could code..
